Linda Weir-Paintings
...show of
celebratory paintings by ...Linda Weir
Cornish Seascapes, Lincolnshire landscapes
and domestic
interior are alldissolved into a
kaleidoscopic maze of luscious colour.
Weir looks out on the world as if
permanentl
enchanted. Everything from sea spray to
living-room wallpaper
appears as if encrusted
with a wealth of baroque jewels. Impasto
touches of
typical violet, emerald, turquoise
and vermilion are applied with obvious
relish.
Like Bonnard and Gilman, Weir manages to
arrange exquisite colours in
lovely visual
harmonies while avoiding slipping off into the
shallow
pleasantries of decoration.
Weir's seascapes are particularly
spectacular. Their
titles, like scudding Clouds, Skipping Waves and Big
Crashing Sea, convey the air of unselfconscious
delight in the invigorating
freshness and wildness of
her subjects.
She also manages to evoke the dazzling
quality of reflected light. These
painting might seduce
the eye , but they are far from escapist, nor were
their
qualities achieved without a struggle. This is
joyousness with guts, and one
more demonstration of
rare, life affirming creativity....
